The first thing DiffMerge can do is compare the folders you specify. Once that task is complete, DiffMerge can sync the files within those folders: update target on right, update target on left, bidirectional update, mirror left to right, or mirror right to left. On top of that, the application can also compare files as text and compare files as binary; after you compare them, you can use the application to merge the files.

The installation file is a lightweight 1.2Mb executable; downloading such a small file will take little of your time. Run this file, click through the instructions presented by a setup wizard and you will be done, also in little time. It is, in all fairness, a simple setup process that will go along smoothly and rapidly.

Launch DiffMerge and the first thing you will see on its tabbed interface is the Start tab. To the left it presents links for launching new comparison tasks and for opening comparison files. To the right it presents a list of comparisons you recently ran – double click any of them to quickly open them. At the top of the interface there’s a traditional File Menu and a toolbar with buttons for various functions the application can perform.

Comparing a couple of folders, for example, is a very straightforward, three step process:
Step 1 – select the folders you want to compare, set up the filters you want to (there are numerous presets for the filters, mind you).
Step 2 – let DiffMerge do its job. After comparing the two folders you specified, it will present you with a list of results.
Step 3 – pick a sync method. You can choose between the following: update target on right, update target on left, bidirectional update, mirror left to right, or mirror right to left.

Comparing and syncing folders is just part of the functionality offered by DiffMerge. On top of that, this Totato-developed tool can also compare and merge text and binary files, generate and print reports (comparison reports in HTML with support for syntax highlighting).

Please note that DiffMerge is free to use for a 30-day trial. You will have to get a license to keep using the application once this trial period is over.

DiffMerge makes it very easy to compare and sync files and to compare and merge files.

Pros

The installation process goes along smoothly and rapidly. There’s nothing complicated about the application’s tabbed interface. Use DiffMerge to compare and sync folders, use it to compare and merge files (text and binary). There are multiple sync methods to choose from. The application integrates with the right click context menu.

Cons

Free to use for a 30-day trial period.
